Dr. Timothy Macaulay, PhD is the Neuroscience Laboratory (NSL) Director within the Biomedical Sciences Branch (SK3) at NASA-Johnson Space Center. The lab supports multiple NASA programs via scientific investigations, technology development, and operational activities. Research is conducted with astronaut crew as well as ground participants in spaceflight analogs such as head down tilt bed rest and sustained centrifugation. The lab specializes in characterizing and mitigating the spaceflight risks of altered sensorimotor/vestibular function impacting crew health and critical mission tasks. Dr. Macaulay is the Principal Investigator of studies evaluating postural and locomotor control countermeasures and quantifying neuro-vestibular adaptations during and after spaceflight. Additional projects in the lab include defining thresholds for readiness to perform surface extravehicular activities and understanding crew capabilities to perform controlled landings during manual vehicle takeovers. Dr. Macaulay earned his B.S. in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of California San Diego in 2015 and his Ph.D. in Biokinesiology from the University of Southern California in 2020.
This presentation will provide an overview of the risk of altered sensorimotor/vestibular functions impacting critical mission tasks, human health, and long-term health during and after spaceflight missions. Evidence from flight and ground analog research studies will be presented along with descriptions of current ongoing investigations and countermeasure development projects.
